FAQs

Brix Count is a method of determining how high sugar levels are in plants. The Brix Scale runs between 1 and 20 and we will need levels between 12 and 20 to keep pests away, depending on the type of plant we’re growing.

No, our produce isn’t certified organic at this time. Check out the USDA: Organic 101 for more information.

Straw bale building is an eco-friendly way to create structures. Whether it’s homes or greenhouses, the structures are built with straw, a sustainable material. When maintained, structures can last up to 100 years, like a traditional home. The walls will be 24 inches thick which has an R factor of 35 to 40 which is three to four times more efficient for holding heat and uses less energy.

Check out Community Rebuilds in Moab, Utah is using the straw bale method for homes. The energy costs are as much as 75% less than in traditional buildings which matters in our greenhouses where we will be using Agam humidifiers to control the climate.

We will use Agam humidifiers to control the climate. Because greenhouses are made of glass, they can easily become too hot or too cold depending on the weather outside. The other issue is humidity. Venting the space means the temperature drops and plants are sensitive and will immediately transport moisture out of their leaves, creating humidity. Then we vent again. You can see how the cycle would never stop.

To combat this cycle, we have changed the angle on the roof of our greenhouses. Our greenhouse will have a traditional roof so the summer sun lands on the insulated roof which controls the heat. In the winter, the sun will enter through windows and heat the greenhouse when it’s needed the most.

To compensate for the amount of sunlight plants need, we will also have LED grow lights. LED is 12 volts rather than 120 volts which cuts down on costs. They won’t ever overheat and are cool to the touch.

Combining a number of methods together, we will have pesticide-free produce. We create a healthy environment for the plants in nutrient-rich soil in an enclosed greenhouse. Simply enclosing the greenhouse means pests are less likely to enter, but this isn’t 100% guaranteed as we will need to enter the greenhouse to check the plants.

We have learned that insects do not like healthy plants. The healthier they are, the less likely we will have pests. Healthy plants have a high Brix level.
